Anderson Japanese Gardens
Japanese Summer Festival: Identity System
For this project, I designed an identity system for the Anderson Japanese Gardens' annual Japanese Garden Festival, celebrating traditional Japanese culture, art, and community. Central to the identity is a custom, handcrafted font I developed for the event, inspired by the forms and rhythm of Japanese lettering. The swirled illustrations represent the intersection of multiple cultures in America, while also being inspired by Japanese design and illustration. The identity is applied to the festival and all necessary design components; signage, posters, marketing materials, etc. These components are combined with unique type treatment and minimal, organic design elements that reflect the beauty and balance of the gardens themselves. The result is a visually striking, culturally respectful identity that captures the essence of the festival and invites the public to experience the event.
Sign mockup to introduce guests to the "Japanese Summer Festival" experience. The wordmark is designed to tastefully showcase the Japanese culture in English writing. Inspired by the gestural strokes of Japanese writing.
A font designed by myself called "Festival Display" for the wordmark. Fully custom and unique for a one-of-one experience at the Anderson Japanese Gardens.
A poster series designed to serve multiple functions -- for use in promotion, signage at the event, and commemoration. Hand drawn swirls highlight the intersectionality of Japanese culture in America.
